In the quest for youthful skin, many resort to drastic measures such as Botox or facelifts, perhaps without realizing there are more natural (and less expensive!) ways to treat and protect aging skin and help restore a fresh faced glow without going under the knife. One of these ways is by using essential oils.
Essential oils are natural plant essences that are taken directly from the plant, herb, tree, root or resin. There are thousands of essential oils, each with special benefits and properties. Many essential oils are excellent for mature skin, including carrot seed, neroli, palmarosa, patchouli and rose otto.
But how do you use these to nourish your skin? The easiest way is to purchase high quality skin care products that include these essential oils and go about your everyday skin care routine. This ensures you’re getting the benefits of these oils without any additional steps or expense.
Another method is facial massage. To do this, add just a few drops of your chosen essential oil(s) to a carrier oil selected for your skin type. Place a few drops of the carrier oil + essential oil blend onto your fingertips and gently massage into the skin in a circular motion. Always remember to massage in an upward and outward motion. Apply gentle pressure to the temples, across the forehead and from the sides of the nose out towards the cheeks.
Facial steams using essential oils are a great way to open up the pores and detoxify the skin. Steaming also assists in the removal of dead skin cells and helps to moisturize the skin. Pour boiling hot water into a bowl and add 5-10 drops of essential oil(s). Place a towel over your head and create a tent over your head, which should be placed near the rim of the bowl, but not too close to the water. The towel helps to capture the steam underneath the tent. Keep your eyes closed and remain under the tent for 5 minutes. Pat your face dry and let it cool. Then apply toner, anti-aging serum and moisturizer.
Finally, another way to use essential oils in the quest for younger skin is to diffuse mood-lifting essential oils such as orange, grapefruit, bergamot or geranium into the air. These essential oils help to reduce stress, and elevate mood. This in turn helps you to relax the forehead and smile more, both of which move muscles upward instead of down. We want the muscles in our faces to go up and out, rather than helping gravity by allowing muscles to frown and develop into deep wrinkles and frown lines.
Essential oils can provide a number of benefits to our moods and directly to our skin, so if you’re looking for less invasive ways to look and feel younger, avoid going under the plastic surgeon’s knife and try essential oils instead. Since everyone’s skin regenerates (turns over new, healthy skin cells) at a different rate, give a new skin care regimen that contains essential oils at least 30 days to see results. Thirty days is not long compared to the expense, pain, potential complications and recovery time from plastic surgery.
